I first attempted this piece while on a plane. Tears flowing freely, my body was in the air, but my heart and mind felt higher still. I kept thinking about the way words can carry us beyond ourselves, and about the way duty, responsibility and love carry us forward in life. There is a sweet cadence in accepting the flow—moving when we have to, following the steps that take us where we are needed.

Catalysts is a collection of original mixed-media works created in response to stories written by Canadian women for the anthology The Fires We Lit. Each piece began as an encounter with another person’s words and became an independent visual reflection on what remained.
