This one moved me in ways that are difficult to describe. I know something of what it means to change yourself to be respected or heard. A woman can be too soft, too gentle, too easy to ignore—or become a bitch, a tyrant, a twisted version of what a woman is expected to be. I wanted to hold that contradiction: the teeth we sometimes grow to survive, and the tenderness that remains behind them. The resolution brought tears to my eyes: there is acceptance to the terms of being a woman.
About Catalysts
Catalysts is a collection of original mixed-media works created in response to stories written by Canadian women for the anthology The Fires We Lit. Each piece began as an encounter with another person’s words and became an independent visual reflection on what remained.
