This piece brought me back to my own family’s immigration stories. My aunt came to Canada very young, after marrying a Canadian with whom she did not yet share a language. I thought about the hardships she endured and everything she learned. The image that stayed with me was a small koi fish—once guarded and sheltered, suddenly released into the immensity of the open sea. That feeling hit home in more ways than one.
About Catalysts
Catalysts is a collection of original mixed-media works created in response to stories written by Canadian women for the anthology The Fires We Lit. Each piece began as an encounter with another person’s words and became an independent visual reflection on what remained.
