I didn’t have a sister, but my mother did and talked about her constantly. I learned to understand this bond through her, and her experiences. A bond that was in ways stronger than any other. That is why the pain in the story that inspired this artwork rang so true and poignant. I wanted this piece to hold both its sweetness and its pain—the regrets and many hues that can colour a relationship, what can be lost, and what, somehow, can never die.
About Catalysts
Catalysts is a collection of original mixed-media works created in response to stories written by Canadian women for the anthology The Fires We Lit. Each piece began as an encounter with another person’s words and became an independent visual reflection on what remained.
